Toyota Calya Makes Its Debut at Dealerships

The Toyota Calya, a seven-seater MUV, has recently arrived at dealerships. Originally launched in 2016 and exclusively sold in Indonesia, the Calya is essentially a rebadged version of the Daihatsu Sigra, which is also available only in Indonesia. Let’s take a closer look at what the Calya offers, its design features, and whether it might make its way to India.

Toyota Calya Design

The design of the Toyota Calya draws inspiration from both the Agya and the Innova Crysta. The front of the Calya features a prominent chrome grille that integrates seamlessly with the headlamps, giving it a distinctive look. The fog lamp bezels are also accented with chrome, creating a cohesive front fascia that aligns with Toyota’s design language. From the front, the Calya could be mistaken for the Ayga, but its side profile reveals more distinct characteristics. The three-row glass design is reminiscent of the Innova Crysta, and the door handles are of the grab-type, while the side mirrors are similar to those on the Etios.

Toyota Calya Interior

Inside, the Toyota Calya’s design is quite straightforward. It features a basic three-spoke steering wheel and a simple center console with an in-dash music system. The Calya is equipped with dual airbags and ABS for safety. The seating configuration is 5+2, with the last two seats best suited for children or short trips. The rear seats can be folded down to expand the boot space. In terms of quality, the Calya offers a better experience than the Datsun, and the gear lever is positioned on the center console.

Toyota Calya Engine Options

In Indonesia, the Toyota Calya is available with two naturally aspirated petrol engines:

  • 1.0-Litre Engine: Produces 66bhp and 89Nm of torque, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission.
  • 1.2-Litre Engine: Delivers 87bhp and 108Nm of torque, available with both a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Should Toyota decide to bring the Calya to India, it might be necessary to equip it with the 1.5-litre engine from the Ertiga to better align with local market requirements.

Toyota Calya Pricing

In the Indonesian market, the Toyota Calya is positioned between the Ayga and the Avanza, with prices ranging from approximately Rs 8.96 lakh to Rs 9.42 lakh (ex-showroom, converted from Indonesian Rupiah). This pricing places the Calya in the same range as the Ertiga in India.

Toyota Calya Launch in India

Currently, Toyota is not planning to introduce the Calya in India. Instead, the company has opted to rebrand the Ertiga as the Rumion for the Indian market. The Calya is already available in Indonesia and received an update in 2022. For now, there are no indications that the Calya will make its way to India.
